"News" Sources Should Not Publish Photos

When "news sources" publish photos of the work of a graffiti artist, you might as well send then a direct invitation for more.

The graffiti writer who's name I'm withholding had this to say about the recent publicity his work had gotten.

"When I went to get a photo of this it had already been removed (grrr). But getting it in the paper makes up for it."

Style Wars - Documentary on Graffiti

"Style Wars" — 1 hour 10 minutes (but worth the view)
A documentary of New York graffiti circa 1983. Presented by Tony Silver & Henry Chalfant. A production of (c) 1983 Public Art Films Inc. (a non-proffit organization), all rights reserved.

A bit old school but still the mentality of a graffiti artist is still valid. This documentary from 1983 gets into the minds of graffiti writers and is able to capture the culture and nature of graffiti artists directly from the writers themselves. Appearing in the film is the still active Godfather of Graffiti "Seen" (course he had a few less grays then).

Take special note of the bomber named "Kap" in the film. Salisbury residents should be able to find his likeness in our own local bombers "Slak" & "Trees". Considered true "toys" in the culture where even the graffiti writers hate them.

"Above"

This is the introduction to the graffiti celeb "Above"

"Know Hope"

Much of todays good "Art Crimes" are made with the intent of pushing out positive influence on a decaying society.

Here is a great example of this from a writer named "Know Hope"

Martha Cooper Interview

This 12 minute interview offers the views of a photographer and author who has been an active observer of the culture since the 70's. From the script she's dishin, she's still up to date in the culture and how it's developed into today.

That's Right.... I'm back!

I've been too busy to worry about the "blogesphere" but I'm now back. Maybe not in the way that the average "obsessive" blogger may be. I read blogs but the Graphix name shall likeley not be a commentator.

But when it comes to the subject of graffiti, and it's culture, I will be posting all of the neat things I find.

Cleaning The Mess

Taking ACTION NOW!
Who is willing to invest more time in how our city looks? It's citizens or it's vandals? If the graffiti keeps mounting with nobody willing to clean it up. The task could get too big for even "THE IDEA" or any other non-profit to solve it. Clean up needs to happen soon! Even if it means some good samaritans stand up to take control. Interested?

Here is a site that offers how-to instruction on graffiti removal.

Be SAFE when cleaning!!
Here is some information that informs you of the hazards of graffiti removal and tells you how to do so safely.

Can you HATE a child?

With graffiti tags now being seen where train tracks pass overhead in our small city of Salisbury, MD. There is good reason to be concerned for our children. Yes graffiti is a crime, and you could even call the graffiti tagger a criminal and a thug. But what if he is only a 13 year old child from YOUR church or worse - your family?

>>Day of the Funeral

>>Two Youths Killed in U.K.

Can we really HATE these children? Can something be done to prevent this from happening to OUR OWN children?
Read "THE IDEA" and give us your input.

"The Idea" Could Use Speakers

If a program like "THE IDEA" existed. It could invite out of town speakers like this gentleman to speak to our youth about graffiti and how to apply that same talent to achieving rewarding work in the legal arena.

Phillip Perez, a 27-year-old better known as "Article"...

If your new to this SITE...

To provide input you may click on comments for any subject.

The topic here is only pertaining to Graffiti and Solutions.
If you have come to this page from another blog, please make any of your topic related comments here at this site rather than at sites you may have come from. It is easier to keep track of any ideas or input if it is all centrally located.

Also, we are looking only for solutions rather than the politics of who did or didn't do what. Please limit your opinions to constructive input and refrain from finger pointing.

Now, please read "THE IDEA" and give your input.

Thank you.

Here's "The Idea"

I've only been entertaining this idea for some years as a fleeting thought. It is of course open for adjustments. This idea would help everyone in the community. It would nurture the talents of growing and maturing youths. It would curb the spending of valued funds involved in clean up and prosecution. It would bring atmosphere, character, and an attraction to the city.

What I propose is a non-profit group of volunteers that has three functions.

FUNCTION 1 — GRAFFITI REMOVAL
By signing up and participating in the graffiti removal crew, volunteers earn rights to participate in Functions 2 & 3 of the "Urban Artists League". These volunteers would be provided with training and materials to remove or cover any art crime that is reported to the league. This group could consist of straight up volunteers as well as court ordered perpetrators to help them understand the harm they had caused.

FUNCTION 2 — NEIGHBORHOOD BEAUTIFICATION PROJECTS
Volunteers and artists participate in creating beautification murals. These projects would be approved by a board or committee and would be applied to business or community properties that are either deteriorating conditions or "idle" businesses.

Murals could also be produced on plywood so that it could be displayed to store front windows that are undergoing construction and renovation. The options here are quite limitless.

FUNCTION 3 — "THE WALL"

By signing up and participating in the graffiti removal crew, volunteers earn rights to participate in "The Wall" . This wall a piece of property that is not in plain view of the public and it's use is donated by local businesses or property owners.

Managed by the program, "The Wall" is an ever changing mural where artists are able to cash in their "graffiti removal" time for wall space of their own. A draft of the artists mural must first be approved by the League before it is applied. The league will insure that no mural contains nudity, brutal violence, or profanity.

Final notes:
Funds could be raised by developing and selling t-shirt designs, posters, etc. What I am talking is not only a solution to curbing crime, but also a way to nurture a culture into a mature, responsible, and helpful existence. All this introduces youth to legal ways to achieve their visions and even how to apply it to a professional trait.

Let me know what you think. Your feedback is appreciated.

Thanks,
Graphix
